Underground manholes are a crucial element in maintaining city infrastructure, providing access to critical utilities like sewer lines, storm drains, and telecommunication networks. For decades, manholes are made of concrete, however in recent years new plastic materials has emerged as a better alternative, offering both environmental and operational values.
Huliot Group, through its Hofit Huliot subsidiary, reinvents the manhole by replacing traditional concrete with either HDPE or PP plastic polymers, lightweight materials that are easy to handle and better for the environment.
Due to its density, strength and durability, concrete has been considered as the best material for manholes, this despite to its heaviness. However, because it is a natural, breathing material, it is susceptible to cracking as a result of temperature changes and ground movement, and it's not 100% watertight. Internal corrosion can develop, and in the presence of aggressive soils or wastewater, chemical agents can leak and damage surfaces.
From an environmental standpoint, concrete production and transportation, have a significant carbon footprint, and concrete demolition creates debris in amounts that are difficult to dispose without significantly causing environmental damages.
Operationally, the cost of the initial material is considerably lower than its plastic alternative, but installation of concrete manholes requires heavy machinery and intensive labor which are costly, and maintenance demanding, often involves patching cracks and addressing leaks, which can be both time-consuming and expensive.
The use of HDPE and PP plastics instead of concrete, is more than replacing a traditional material with a better alternative. What we did at Hofit Huliot is in essence reinventing the manhole.
HDPE and PP allows us to design and manufacture high-endurance manholes for heavy loads, at sizes and in diameters that were not possible before. The new generation of manholes are superior both in quality and durability, they are more reliable than the concrete version and they bring environmental benefits that are becoming a standard. Finally, although plastic manholes may be more expensive than concrete manholes per unit, thanks to lower installation and maintenance needs, they deliver an optimal combination of functionality & value.
While 75% of existing installed manholes are concrete, more than 25% of new installations are new generation plastic manholes, including those manufactured by Huliot Group. Plastic manholes offer advantages in weight, environmental measures, installation speed, and potentially overall costs, and as a result in range of diameters, sizes and installation depths. While concrete manholes may provide a sufficient solution in the short term, plastic manholes are the future.
